CULTURAL HERITAGE RESTORATION TECHNICIAN (Skilled Technician)

The professional profile acquired through the course is Cultural Heritage Restoration Technician, also known as a “Restoration Assistant”.

The course is recognised by Regione Toscana in accordance with Law 32/2002 and it respects the standards approved by The Conference of Italian Regions, which has permanently established its three-year duration involving 2700 hours, 60% of which is allocated to practical activities. 60% of the practical activities must be carried out on artefacts classified as cultural heritage in accordance with the law.

The Cultural Heritage Restoration Technician is a fundamental figure during conservation, maintenance, and restoration interventions on architectural and artistic heritage. The Cultural Heritage Restoration Technician supports the skilled Restorer and directly and indirectly follows their methodological and operative directions when working on worksites where the artistic heritage is eventually re-established and brought to new life.

The objective of the course is to train qualified operators in the restoration of Paintings on wooden and textile support who will acquire the broadest intervention capacity in this field. The direct approach to restoration, thanks to workshop practical experience, gives the student the opportunity to learn and employ all the complex theoretical and practical aspects that are involved in the restoration of cultural goods.

The workshop is the centre of the activities for the practical experience of the students. An important factor for educational success is the identification of artefacts and pieces that have adequate characteristics to carry out practical exercises on, in order to benefit from that deepened learning experience and then be able to reach the appropriate level of competence needed in the workforce.

During the course the students carry out the intervention itself, in all its phases, under the constant direction of the restorer-teacher, thereby gaining a strong manual approach together with the necessary scientific and technological approach.

Basic objectives:
Fundamentals of art history; artistic techniques and restoration history.
Basics of physics, chemistry, and biology (applied and diagnostic).
Main operating and application systems in information technology.
Worker and employer’s duties.
Sectoral regulation (restoration); fundamentals of cultural heritage and landscaping legislation.

Professional duties.

Technical and professional objectives:
Historical-artistic characteristics of the different types of cultural heritage; technology of the constitutive materials of the goods.
Restoration material technology (including low environmental impact materials); phenomenology of the deterioration of goods; intervention methodology and technique (prevention/conservation/ restoration); optimal environmental parameters for the different types of goods; main diagnostic techniques; drawing and relief representation methods and techniques.
Techniques and instruments for graphic, photographic, and digital reproduction; documentation, cataloguing and archiving techniques.

The teachers

The teachers are specialists in the relevant subjects and are professionals in their specific field.

In particular, the teachers of the fundamental disciplines of this course are restorers and possess broad teaching experience. The course coordinator is assisted by a group tutor who fulfils assistance, linking, orientation and support purposes.

Course activities
The activity hours, specified in the study plan, includes: theoretical and methodological classes, practical lessons in the lab and on the restoration school worksite, visits to sector exhibitions and businesses, experts’ conferences and speeches, internships and apprenticeships, guided practical activities, halfway tests, preparation for the final exam, work guidance and orientation.

The duration of the course is 2700 hours over a three-year period divided in:

Frontal instruction for 30% of the allocated hours

Practical workshop hours, onsite training on a worksite and an internship for about 70% of the allocated hours.

The duration of the internship is 810 hours.

Not less than 60% of the hours allocated to technical-didactic activities within the course is spent on working on artefacts classified as cultural heritage, in accordance with the Cultural Heritage Law.

Courses Admission
The professional courses are open to a limited number of participants: each class is available to 10 candidates over the age of 18.

Entry requirements: Italian secondary education: secondary school diploma (from the second phase of secondary school), or a three-year qualification obtained within the Italian Education and Professional Training System. Those who have a foreign qualification need to present a declaration of value or an equivalent document that attests conformity with the qualifications obtained in the country of origin in order to verify the level of education.

All candidates must obtain a medical fitness for work certificate as per T.U. 81/08, to be issued through a medical examination. Those who are not eligible for the certificate will not be admitted to the course.

Admission of foreign students
All classes are conducted in Italian. Foreign students are required to have a good knowledge of spoken and written Italian that will allow them to actively participate in the educational programme. A B2 level certification (or above) of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages is required. Without this certification, upon request, candidates’ level of language knowledge can be tested prior to the course. Their language knowledge must be equivalent to the B2

2 level in order to enrol in the course.
Non-EU students: A valid residence permit is required to be allowed to take part in the professional education programme.

Credit recognition
When enrolling in the course, participants can make a formal request asking for their additional competencies (besides those required) to be recognised which are included in the profile. The evaluation is made by the Commission for entry credit recognition through the examination of documents (educational qualifications, curriculum vitae) and possibly completed with practical tests and an individual interview to verify competencies.

Attendance
Class attendance is mandatory.

At the end of the training programme those who have attended classes for at least 75% of the course hours and have obtained the required minimum score for each formative unit can access the final examination in order to obtain the qualification.

Final exam and procedures
The exam usually takes place over two days and consists of:
1 – A 60-minute written test;
2 – A 6- hour practical test,;
3 – A 20-minute oral test for each student.
The assessment is established by c.d. checker giving a unitary score to correct answers and no score for incorrect and/or blank answers.

Certificates and Diplomas
The educational programme corresponds to the three-year programme required by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage for the qualification of “Cultural Heritage restoration technician” or “Cultural Heritage restoration assistant”. Those who pass their final exam obtain a professional qualification certificate, “Cultural Heritage restoration technician (skilled technician) – Paintings on wooden and textile support” corresponding  to level IVa of the European Qualifications Framework.

Course recognition and educational qualifications
In accordance with the National Law nr.845/21.12.1978 Regione Toscana has organised the regional professional education by applying its own rules and regulations with respect to the European directives and in agreement with the Italian State. The Professional Construction School and CPT of Florence is part of  he Regional Training System as it is an accredited training organisation (Cod. OF 0189). The title of professional qualification, as it is issued by a Region delegated by the Italian State in accordance with the National Law nr.845/21.12.1978, is valid throughout Italy.

The title is also valid in EU countries.
